Many Brits are now asking how to move to Germany after Brexit? Well the answer is just the same way as before, but hurry before things change!!!!

Now that the UK has left the EU there is a transition period until 31st December 2020 where essentially nothing changes up to that date. Brits can still move to Germany or any other EU country and work or live. However once the transition period has come to a close (it may be extended past the 31st December 2020) then it may become more difficult to move to Germany after Brexit.

Moving to Germany after Brexit

If you have been thinking about moving to Germany then it’s a good idea to get your finger out and move to Germany before the transition period ends. However it’s not enough to just move to Germany, you must also make yourself a legal resident of Germany prior to the end of the Transition period. If you are resident in Germany at the end of the transition period, you will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement, and your rights will be protected for as long as you remain resident in Germany.

If you currently live in Germany but do not have Resident status then it’s time to get that sorted as you may find yourself becoming an illegal immigrant if your house is not in order after Brexit and the transition period expires.

German residency

If you are planning on living or working in Germany for more than 3 months, you must register at your local registration office within 14 days of arrival. The office is sometimes known as the Einwohnermeldeamt, Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR), Bürgerbüro or Bürgeramt.

Whenever you move home in Germany, you must register your new address.

If you are resident in Germany before the transition period ends on 31 December 2020, you will be able to stay. So now is the time to act.

To confirm your rights under the Withdrawal Agreement and stay after 31 December 2020, you must apply for a new residence permit from your local Foreigners Authority (Ausländerbehörde).

You will need a valid UK passport when applying for a residence permit.

After the end of the transition period, things are bound to get more complicated with regard to moving to Germany. Until negotiations are completed during the transition period it is unsure exactly what will happen with regard to moving to Germany after Brexit and the transition period are completed, but it’s fair to say that it will result in a more complicated process to become a resident in Germany.
