UNDATED – The Automobile License Plate Collectors Association has honored the new Oklahoma license plate with the Best Plate Award.
The Oklahoma plate beat out eight other plates, including the new Texas plate and won first place by four votes over the new Ohio license plate.
The ALPCA judged each plate on its legibility and attractiveness.
Members of the ALPCA were at the state capitol Monday to present a plaque for the Best Plate Award to officials who led the effort to redesign the Oklahoma plate, the Oklahoma Tax Commission, and the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department.
"We are pleased to be recognized with this award," said Hardy Watkins, executive director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. "Our agency seeks to promote Oklahoma and brand our state in a way that is modern, yet respectful of our heritage with every opportunity we're given, including the official license plate."
Gus Oliver, who's been a member of the ALPCA for 11 years, nominated the Oklahoma plate. Oliver is a reserve police officer and realtor in Tulsa.
This is the third time Oklahoma has won this award since it began in 1970. Oklahoma is one of only three other states to have won three times.
