EDMOND, Oklahoma -- To keep the roads safer, the Edmond City Council has passed an updated bicycle ordinance.
Starting April 27, drivers must give bicyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing. If a driver is caught closer than that, they could receive a $500 fine.
"We've had a lot of close calls, and we have had some people who had minor accidents. Unfortunately, there were several last year in the Oklahoma City area, and one Edmond man actually died over there, and several others were killed over there in the spring time last year," said Glynda Chu, Edmond Police spokesperson.
To remind drivers of the new rule, police cars will have bumper stickers and signs will be placed along the roads.
