Report Ranks Oklahoma Among Top States With Deteriorating Bridges

OKLAHOMA CITY – A new reports ranks Oklahoma second for having the largest number of deteriorating bridges.

"Transportation for America" released its report on the nation's bridges Wednesday.

According to the report, 22 percent of Oklahoma bridges are considered "structurally deficient."  That's more than 5,000 bridges.

Oklahoma ranks second on the list, right behind Pennsylvania.

The report shows more than 11 percent of the country's highway bridges are "structurally deficient." The group said that means more than 69,000 bridges across the U.S.

"As Congress takes up the next six-year transportation bill, it is imperative that we devote a larger share of funding to protecting our bridges," James Corless, director of Transportation for America, said.

According to the report, the counties in Oklahoma with the most struturally deficient bridges are:

  1. Grant County - 50.4 percent
  2. Pawnee County - 45.1 percent
  3. Logan County - 41.9 percent
  4. Creek County - 41.8 percent
  5. Lincoln County - 40.9 percent

According to the report, the counties in Oklahoma with the least amount of structually deficient bridges are:

  1. Murray County - 9.2 percent
  2. Greer County - 7.4 percent
  3. Rogers Mills County - 6.6 percent
  4. Beckham County - 6.3 percent
  5. Love County - 6.1 percent
