TULSA, Oklahoma -- Sometimes the best thing that can happen is to lose a job. It's frightening and painful, but can lead to something much better.
It happened just that way for LeAnne Queen. She went from a gray cubicle jungle to wide open spaces and absolutely loves it.
Under the supervision of the neighbor's rather large dog, LeAnne Queen is cheerfully pushing her mower through a customer's backyard. It's raining a little and that makes this tough going. The grass is wet and clogs the mower constantly.
"There's worse things," she said. "I could be sitting behind a desk right now."
Not long ago she was. Then her boss did her a terrific favor: he fired her. Of course she didn't think so at the time.
She and her husband have four kids. He's a full time student, she was helping the kids mow lawns for extra money and thought this could be a real business.
"I get tired and out of breath, but I love it," LeAnne said.
She went to a business conference for women got some inspiration and turned that little side business into Big Mama's Mowin'.
"Being in that cubicle jungle sucked the life out of me," she said.
Now she's found something she really loves. But, she needs better equipment. She's still working with the old family mower.
That business conference gave her some funding ideas and she's in the process of buying a commercial mower. That will enable her to do more lawns faster and expand the business. She says more lawns, equals more exercise, and better health.
"Once I'm out there moving my body, cutting the grass, I'm happy, I have a good time," she said. "For some reason it makes me happy."
