News On 6 Sky Cam Video Helps Tulsa Police Catch Fleeing Speeder

TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa police were able to catch a driver who led them on a high speed chase with help from News On 6 Sky Cam video.

A motorcycle officer tried to pull over a speeding vehicle around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, but said the driver of the black Toyota Corolla took off, weaving along Riverside Drive, Peoria and Lewis.

A motorcycle officer said he tried to pull over the driver of a black Toyota Corrola around 38th and South Lewis for going 56 miles per hour in a 35. He says she didn't pull over, but instead, hit the gas.

"They went through 15th and Lewis at 80 miles an hour against a red light. He almost lost control due to the high speeds. He slowed down but the vehicle never slowed down," Officer Charlie Tapper said.

He said the driver reached speeds of up to 120 miles per hour, and it became extremely dangerous,  so out of fear of someone getting hurt, they called off the pursuit and they lost sight of her.

But News On 6 didn't. One of our sky cameras spotted her and our assignment desk editor called 911.

"We were listening to the pursuit and we saw him exit at 41st and Garnett and go into an apartment complexes," , he said in the call.

That was exactly the information the officers needed and they headed that way.

"We searched apartment complexes in that area and located the vehicle thanks to your information," Officer Tapper said.

A witness told police she had jumped out of the black car into another one and took off.

Officers found paperwork in the black rental car that led them to 22 year old Amanda Wilkerson, who showed up late for drills at the Sand Springs National Guard Armory.

"Yes, we were very surprised," Officer Tapper said. "She's in the military and was wearing her uniform and she had seven outstanding traffic warrants and said she panicked and got scared and that's why she ran."

Records show warrants for speeding and improper tag were issued March 15, 2011, and warrants for speeding, no insurance verification and drivng with a suspended license were issued May 3,2011, and warrants for speeding and suspended license were issued June 1, 2011.

However, police say that was minor compared to what she's facing now.

"Now, it's a felony and she faces imprisonment," Officer Tapper said.
