Grant, Volunteers Create Turley Community Garden

TURLEY, Oklahoma -- It's really cool when something abandoned is turned into something useful. Organizers now have a $25,000 check from Federal Home Loan Bank for a community garden near Turley.

A non-profit group called "A Third Place Community Foundation" helped raise money to buy the property. Stimulus dollars paid the county to clear it, and now volunteers are doing the rest.

"It's great for this area - they've had a lot of heartache lately," said Martha Hoffman, President of Freedom Bank of Oklahoma.

"With the closing of Cherokee School, they're closing the post office that has been here forever, and then of course the fires that happened just earlier this week, so this is something that finally gives the community something to focus on that's positive for a change."

Forty donated fruit trees will create an orchard on the lot.
