A semi truck crashed off the 23rd Street bridge on U.S. Highway 75 Thursday morning. The bridge is over BNSF Railroad tracks. The truck landed on those tracks.
Tulsa Fire was dispatched to the scene to deal with the truck's diesel fuel.
Tulsa Police had to shut down traffic on the overpass for a short time.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation's Martin Stewart says the driver was exiting southbound when the truck's trailer went over the guardrail and fell onto the tracks below.
Stewart says the trailer pulled the truck's cab over the guardrail and that is what saved the driver's life.
ODOT says the guardrail was the only thing damaged on the bridge.
There was no BNSF train traffic at the time of the crash.
EMSA says the 37-year-old driver walked away from the crash, but was checked out by EMSA paramedics before he was taken to a Tulsa hospital in fair condition.
