Hostess Brands, which makes Twinkies, Wonder Bread and Ding Dongs, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York on Wednesday.

Hostess, previously called Interstate Bakeries Corporation, operates 36 regional bakeries, including one at 11th and Sheridan in Tulsa.

It also has 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes and 570 bakery outlet stores throughout the U.S.

In court documents, Hostess says the reason is labor costs.

Hostess says it plans to continue to negotiate with 12 unions to modify collective-bargaining agreements governing the employment of its union workers, who comprise 83% of its approximately 19,000 employees.

If no agreement is reached, Hostess says it will seek to throw out those agreements.

There is no word in the bankruptcy filing on whether any of its bakeries or distribution centers would be closed.
