A Tulsa high school will be making use of one of Oklahoma's abundant natural resources to power both learning opportunities and a greenhouse.
McLain High School for Science and Technology flipped the switch Tuesday on a new solar array system. The project was partially funded by a $12,500 Henry Bellmon Sustainability Award won in 2010.
The solar array will help keep down operating costs for a school greenhouse and will help students learn more about renewable energy alternatives and possible careers in that field, according to Corey Williams of Sustainable Tulsa.
"Sustainable Tulsa is excited to be a partner in this project with McLain High School," Williams said.
"This solar energy project is a wonderful opportunity for McLain High School, and is a tribute to many years of innovation and imaginative thinking we have had at McLain," said TPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Ballard.
The Southside Rotary Club of Tulsa, AT&T, Williams, the Osage Nation and ION Solar also helped the school district make the project a reality.
