Two Young Boys Killed In Apartment Complex Fire In Midwest City

Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked a fire that killed two young boys in Midwest City on Sunday afternoon. Investigators do say the fire was not suspicious.

It was an emotional day for first responders and neighbors when they learned the young brothers had died at the Raintree Meadow Apartments. The complex is located at 471 Harr Drive, just northwest of S.E. 29th Street and S. Air Depot Boulevard.

A 26-year-old woman was also found unresponsive at the scene but she was later revived at the hospital.

When firefighters arrived, a police officer was already giving CPR to one of the two young boys.

"Incredible smoke, basically densed the whole area with smoke. We couldn't see anything. The firefighters arrived and they brought out an individual on a stretcher and performed CPR and approximately five minutes later it appeared they brought out an infant or a small child," apartment tenant Steve Wilson said.

Wilson, who lives in the downstairs unit, says his dog "Tut" saved his life.

"My dog started barking, didn't know much, didn't pay attention, then I woke up. After I woke up I ran, I ran to the door, went to the door, opened up the door and I see flames and once I see the flames I grabbed my dog and ran out."

While he's grateful to be alive and able to salvage some of his belongings, Wilson says his heart goes out to the victims who lived upstairs.

"It's just a bad situation, a very, very bad situation," Wilson said.

The fire damaged eight units, forcing some tenants to jump out windows to avoid the smoke and flames. As firefighters spent hours investigating the fire, the community in the apartment complex watched and waited, ready to help in any way they could.

The American Red Cross was also at the scene this afternoon trying to help several displaced families.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
