For the third year in a row, Tulsa has been picked as one of the Teach for America training locations.

It's a program dedicated to getting young teachers, 650 of which will train Tulsa this summer, into under-privileged areas.

They'll spend this summer teaching TPS's summer classes and getting mentored by the district's veteran teachers.

After the summer 150 of the new teachers will be split between Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

The remaining will go to other states.

"We bring 75 teachers a year into Tulsa and they commit to a two-year program, so they're very important," said Dr. Keith Ballard, TPS Superintendent. "They're very dedicated. They're very hard working and they've had great results in Tulsa, as they have had across the nation."

"I think it's going to be an invaluable experience for our students to have the opportunity to teach Tulsa students and learn and grow from the community," said Laura Brewer of Teach for America

Also, Ballard tells us he's working with donors to get enough money to fill the other 75 teaching positions that are on the chopping block.

Summer school in Tulsa starts Monday June 18, 2012 and goes until July 13, 2012. More than 5,000 students have enrolled in summer school this year.

The University of Tulsa will be hosting and housing the Teach for America teachers.
