With Red Cross blood supplies at their lowest point in 15 years, three Heisman heroes are coming to the rescue.
Oklahoma Heisman Trophy winners Steve Owens, Billy Sims and Jason White will be at the Tulsa Red Cross donation center, 10151 East 11th Street, from noon to 2 p.m. August 1 to encourage donors to beat the heat and donate blood.
"As we've done for the past few years, Billy, Jason and I are helping the Red Cross bring attention to the need for blood," said Steve Owens, the 1969 Heisman winner and Norman businessman.
"What a great opportunity to make a difference, and remember donating blood just takes an hour of your time. It will make you a hero to me and to those your donation impacts."
All blood types are needed to combat the 15-year record low in donations.
Everyone who donates blood from August 1 through September 30 will get a "Heismans to the Rescue" T-shirt. They will also be entered into prize drawings including one for a football signed by the OU Heisman winners.
The kick-off for the blood donation campaign will be at the east Tulsa donation center from 10:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 2.
