The Department of Corrections said an inmate in the Oklahoma State Penitentiary died after setting a fire in his cell.
Prison personnel responded to the H-Unit around 2:45 p.m. Saturday, after smoke was noticed coming from the cell. The DOC said the offender had covered his window and started a fire in his cell.
The 26-year-old inmate was treated and transported to the medical unit and died at a local hospital some time later.
The DOC said the exact cause of death is unknown, at this time.
The man was serving time for multiple convictions in Tulsa County. He had been in the penitentiary since April 2006.
The H-Unit of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary houses death row inmates, prisoners segregated for disciplinary or administrative reasons, as well as Level III general population inmates.
The name of the inmate is being withheld until the next of kin is notified.
