Oklahoma Under State-Wide Burn Ban

All Oklahoma counties are under a burn ban order from Governor Mary Fallin. The Oklahoma Forestry Service recommended the ban on outdoor burning in all 77 counties effective immediately.

"Extreme heat and ongoing drought have created conditions very conducive to wildfires," Fallin said in a news release.

"A statewide burn ban is now necessary to reduce the risk of preventable wildfires and to protect lives and property."

Fallin urged Oklahomans to be especially careful with lit cigarettes, flat tires and cars parked in dry grass which can all spark grass fires.

"Everyone must do their part to help prevent fires and to keep our families and businesses safe from harm," she said.

Residents are also urged to report any fire they see immediately.

Unlawful activities under the ban include:

• Campfires
• Bonfires
• Fireworks
• Setting fire to debris or trash, grass, woods or other materials outdoors

The ban permits gas and charcoal grilling as long as it is over a nonflammable surface like concrete or gravel and at least five feet from flammable vegetation. There are exemptions for a number of items such as welding and road construction.
