The Creek County Sheriff's Office has confirmed they have a person of interest in last Wednesday's fatal shooting of a man in a home east of Drumright.

According to Lieutenant Charles Redfern, the person of interest in the shooting is a juvenile.

Redfern said the minor must be issued a court-appointed attorney before any other details can be released.

Roy Varnell, 64, was shot, sitting in a chair in his home near State Highway 33 and 449th West Avenue last Wednesday morning.

Varnell, who was disabled, was babysitting his 8-year-old granddaughter and his 12-year-old grandson when the shooting occurred.

The day of the shooting, detectives said they were talking to the children, hoping one of them might have seen something.

Family members said the boy woke up to a gunshot and heard the back door slam, but didn't see anyone in the house.

Investigators found some weapons inside the house that belonged to Varnell and said it was possible that one of those was the weapon used in Varnell's death.

Varnell's son, Darrin, a Pawnee County Sheriff's Deputy, said all of Varnell's guns were locked up except for an old single-shot 22-gauge shotgun, which was leaning up against a wall.

Roy Varnell's funeral service was held Monday.
