A Tulsa Police officer is on routine administrative leave after an officer-involved shooting early Sunday.
The shooting took place at 1:45 a.m. in the 100 block of South Olympia Avenue, according to Captain Karen Tipler with the Tulsa Police Department.
Tipler said the officer pulled over a driver who eventually stopped in a driveway at that address.
"When the suspect exited the vehicle, he had a gun in his hand and began fire upon the officer," Tipler said. The officer returned fire, and the man ran away.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Harry Hamilton Jr., was hit several times and was taken to a local hospital for surgery. The officer was not injured though some rounds struck his patrol car.
Officers recovered a semi-automatic handgun discarded in a backyard in the neighborhood. They also recovered a small amount of marijuana from Hamilton, Tipler said.
Hamilton is in stable condition Sunday evening, according to police. A search of Oklahoma Department of Corrections shows Hamilton has served time for drug possession with intent to distribute and shooting with intent to kill.
