August: Osage County Makes History In Boulanger

Filming was scheduled to begin Monday on the latest movie being shot in Osage County. The feature length film is based on a play written by Tulsa native Tracy Letts.

News On 6 went on location in Pawhuska and the community of Boulanger, near the Kansas state line.

The movie, called August: Osage County, centers on the Weston family who gather after a death in the family. Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, and Benedict Cumberbatch have all been cast in the movie.

George Clooney is a producer on the film.

Most of the film will take place inside a home in Boulanger, in rural Osage County. The home was built around 1910 and was actually a mail order home from Sears-Roebuck.

"Shipped in by train is the story I heard from my uncles," said Mitch Boulanger.

Mitch Boulanger is the grandson of Walter Boulanger, the man who built the home and founded the community.

"My father, who is not with us anymore, would just be tickled pink that they're doing this in the home," Boulanger said."It is a marvelous home, and maybe it'll be a historical sight someday soon."

We weren't allowed to get very close so it was hard to tell if there was in filming taking place, but we could see lots of work being done outside the home.

The rest of the filming will be in the city of Pawhuska. The famed triangle area is reported to be a bus stop in the movie, and we're told crews will be shooting at the famous Bad Brad's Bar-B-Q later this week.

Residents here says it's been fun having the production crew in town checking out the city or even stopping in for a bite to eat.

"Maybe this is the new California," said Pawhuska resident Taryn Crawford.

Taryn Crawford has lived in Pawhuska all of her life. She's thrilled that her hometown will soon be the focus of moviegoers across the world.

"Maybe they'll want to come back and see Pawhuska. That's good, that's what we need," she said.

Marlene Mosley is also enjoying the moment. Her hot dog restaurant has stayed quite busy with special orders for the production crew.

"I never in a million years thought that I would be serving people that have such an impact on America in the movies," said business owner Marlene Mosley.

It all starts in a century-old home, built by a pioneer now linked to the silver screen.

"It's pretty nice to know that my grandfather is getting recognition after all this time," said Mitch Boulanger. "Sixty-plus years later he's finally getting recognition for what they say is the first Osage Indians to found a town."

Filming is scheduled to take place here in Pawhuska and Osage County, as well as Washington County over the next eight weeks.
