Tulsa Police responded to what was apparently an accidental shooting involving a 3-year-old child. The toddler is expected to be OK.
Emergency responders were called to the 4100 block of East 1st Street at about 12:30 p.m. and found a 3-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the lower leg.
They say the child was in the care of his grandmother when the injury occurred. Her boyfriend had a .22-caliber revolver at the home, according to Corporal Ron Clark with the Tulsa Police Department.
"Her boyfriend was in a room with the child at the back of the residence," Corporal Clark said at the scene. "We believe it was an accidental discharge of a handgun."
The boyfriend told officers that he bought the revolver at a Tulsa flea market last weekend and did not believe it was operable.
"It's a lesson to be learned," Clark said.
The boy was transported to a local hospital in serious condition, according to EMSA. Tulsa police say they are continuing to investigate the shooting.
