Tulsa Family Starts To Rebuild After SUV Crashed Into Home On Christmas Day

A Tulsa family is looking to rebuild the "Habitat for Humanity" house they now call home.

Yolanda Knox and her three children had only lived there two months, when an SUV plowed into their living room on Christmas morning.

Knox said, despite this difficult time, she and her family are making it through this trying time with the help of their family, friends and faith.

"Most people can't believe it, and I still can't believe it either. It's just unreal," Knox said.

Their Christmas morning, a day normally filled with opening presents and big smiles, came within seconds of turning tragic.

Knox's son had just left the living room when an SUV came crashing in.

"Thankful and blessed, my son's life was spared," Knox said.

They've boarded up the living room wall, but the damage still remains, both to the home and to Knox and her children.

"The truck almost went through the wall to his room, so he doesn't sleep in there, he sleeps with me," Knox said.

The SUV was traveling on East Independence, at the end of which sits Knox's home at the intersection with North Rockford.

"She has spent many hours, actually hammering on that home, so I know that was disappointing," said Jane Dunbar, Director of Development of Tulsa's Habitat for Humanity chapter. "We are just trying to stay in touch with her, see if she's ok, and see if there is anything we can help her with."

And Habitat for Humanity isn't alone. Knox said friends and family have also reached out.

"There's been a few calls, people offering furniture, and that's cool, we appreciate it. We just want to get this fixed first before we put anything else in this room," Knox said.

The living room may be empty until the front wall is fixed, but it's a home that's full of love and a desire to move forward.

"This is our house, and we're going to stay here. We worked for it, we deserve it and we're going to make the best of this," Knox said.

Knox pays a mortgage and has insurance on her home. An adjuster arrived just as we finished our interview.

As for the driver of the SUV, she was taken to the hospital, but we haven't gotten word about her condition or what caused her to crash.
