Competency Exam Ordered For Bartlesville Student Accused Of Threats

A Washington County judge has ordered an 18-year-old Bartlesville High School student to undergo a mental competency examination before he's formally arraigned on a charge of planning to perform an act of violence.

Sammie Chavez remains in the Washington County jail following his arrest in December 2012.

Bartlesville Police say Chavez was arrested a day before the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. They say they began their investigation after getting a tip Chavez had made threats concerning Bartlesville High School.

According to court documents, Chavez attempted to recruit other students to help him carry out a plan to lure students into the school auditorium where he would then open fire.

The affidavit states Chavez planned to chain the doors of the auditorium shut and place bombs near the doors so they would go off as police tried to enter.

Chavez's bond is $1 million.
