A Tulsa Public Schools bus driver has been suspended with pay while police investigate whether an argument turned into an assault.

It happened Thursday afternoon at Key Elementary.

Police say a bus driver got into an argument with teachers about children on the bus.

When the principal intervened, witnesses said the driver pushed principal Doug Howard backward, possibly injuring his back.

Campus police say it's clear when a bus is on campus, the principal has the final say.

"So when the principal takes the initiative to say ‘we're going to take kids off or put kids on,' that's really his call," TPS Campus Police Chief Gary Rudick said.

Campus police are investigating but did not arrest the driver, who they identified as Steven Browder.

Browder is on paid suspension.

He's been a driver for one year.

An ambulance responded to the incident, but Howard wasn't treated at the scene.

Police say he wasn't seriously hurt but went to a doctor as a routine precaution.

The investigation will go to the district attorney for possible charges.
