WARNING Graphic Image: Cherokee Nation Investigates K-9 Bite Incident

The Cherokee Nation Marshal Service is investigating an incident in which a K-9 officer bit a motorist during a routine traffic stop on January 23, 2014. The traffic stop occurred near Kenwood at about 8 p.m.

Friends of Emily Newman said she was bitten on her left cheek by a Cherokee Nation Marshal Service K-9 Officer.

Details of what led to this are vague, but Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin said, "The Marshal's K-9 detected a positive hit for narcotics on the vehicle."

"We take every police enforcement matter seriously; everything that the Marshal Service does. Certainly we take this matter seriously. Certainly our thoughts and prayers are with the motorist and her family," said Hoskin.

The Cherokee Nation said K-9 officers are often used when there is reasonable suspicion of drugs during a traffic stop.

We checked Newman's history and court records show she has pleaded guilty to multiple crimes, including assault and battery on a police officer.

"Anytime we have a stop, there's always a review process," Hoskin said. "Anytime charges are filed, there's always a review process, so that will be underway."

The Cherokee Nation said a "police report will be finalized early this week and forwarded to the Cherokee Nation Attorney General's office for further review."

"The number one goal of the Marshal Service is to protect our citizens and ensure their safety, and we are dedicated to that mission," said Shannon Buhl, director of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service.

"We want our citizens to know that this incident is being fully investigated and the appropriate course of action will be taken."

"The Marshal Service alerted me immediately after this incident had occurred and has cooperated fully and completely with my office throughout the investigation. I look forward to receiving their report," said Cherokee Nation Attorney General Todd Hembree.

Friends and family said Newman was taken to a Tulsa hospital for treatment.

The Cherokee Nation said the K-9 officer involved in the incident remains out of service.
