Time for a quick update this Sunday morning. Fast moving system will be impacting the state through the early afternoon hours, then quickly exit on eastward by evening bringing an end to the wintry precipitation. Locally heavy snow bands could produce local amounts in excess of 4", particularly along the I-40 corridor and points to the SE into the higher terrain. There will be a sharp gradient to the north of that with potentially a couple of inches along the I-44 corridor and dropping quickly to the NW of that. Obviously, it all depends on the exact positioning of those heavier snow bands as they develop during the course of the morning and into the early afternoon.

Brisk northerly winds will also produce some drifting of the snow making travel hazardous in many locations by late morning and through the afternoon.

Temperatures will stay below freezing throughout the day with wind chill values generally in the teens.

Monday will see a brief break in the weather before the next storm system moves in that night and into the day Tuesday. Temperatures will struggle to get much above freezing during the day Monday and will be near freezing much of the day Tuesday as well. Problem with the weather on Tuesday is somewhat warmer air aloft which makes the precipitation type questionable and we may end up with more of a mixed bag before it all changes over to snow late in the day. Also, it appears that a dry slot aloft will be moving overhead during the day and these factors should limit the snowfall potential to an inch or two except for the more NW counties where some locally heavier totals will be possible.

With snow on the ground and brisk northerly winds for the rest of the week, temperatures will struggle to even make it to the freezing mark each day and generally in the teens each night. Another system with the potential for additional snowfall will then be impacting the state by Friday going into the coming weekend. So, a busy start to the month of February after a relatively quiet January.

As always, stay tuned and check back for updates.
