EMSA said a woman died in a two-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of the Broken Arrow Expressway at Sheridan Thursday morning.
Tulsa Police said a PT Cruiser clipped the left rear corner of a Mazda Miata on the highway at about 6:15 a.m. The PT Cruiser then went off the highway coming to rest upside down next to the on-ramp from Sheridan.
Officers said the driver, Lauren Hensel, 24, of Tulsa was not wearing a seatbelt when the PT Cruiser rolled.
Her five-year-old son in the car survived. Police said he was restrained in a car seat.
For those who saw it happen, it's something they won't soon forget.
"I don't know, it's horrible," said Mike Leslie.
Witnesses said after the collision on the BA, the PT Cruiser left the highway, hit a light pole and rolled down the embankment several times. They said the woman was thrown from the SUV several yards away onto the on-ramp.
Several drivers, who saw what happened, stopped and got out to help.
"A man in blue, a nurse, got down there and was already starting CPR. And then I went over and helped them with the baby. They had pulled the baby, who was in a car seat, out," said Mike Leslie.
Police said the boy was alert and crying. EMSA said he was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later said his condition was upgraded to fair. Police said Thursday afternoon the boy had very minor injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Firefighters desperately tried to save the woman's life.
"They did do compressions at the scene, they were able to get her stable enough to put her on the gurney and take her to the hospital," said Tulsa Police Cpl. Jerrod Hart.
For those who stopped to help, they know they did what they could.
"Emergency mode kicks in and you just do what you can do. And everybody did," said Mike Leslie.
Police said the driver of the Mazda was not injured.
Westbound traffic on the Broken Arrow Expressway was backed up for miles as police spent hours surveying the scene and collecting evidence.
