Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers say a Tulsa man was critically injured after running head on into a directional sign on the side of Interstate 44.

It happened just before 6 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the interstate near Sheridan Road.

Authorities are still investigating what caused the driver of a four-door Honda Civic to leave the roadway and hit the 41st Street exit sign.

They believe 35-year-old Desmond L. Campbell may have been sleepy, according to a collision report.

Tulsa firefighters freed the man from the car. Campbell had leg and head injuries, the trooper's report states.

Trooper Jon Lipe said the man was in critical condition when taken to a Tulsa hospital.
