The TU women's basketball team edged past Texas Southern in overtime during Tuesday‘s game.
Junior guard Ashley Clark, freshman guard Erika Wakefield, and senior forward Mariah Turner all ended the game scoring double digits. Clark had a game-best 22 points. She also led TU with eight rebounds and two blocks. Wakefield had 13 points, five assists, and three steals. Turner contributed ten points to the mix.
This game moved TU to 2-2 on the season. "I think us coming back from being down [by] eight at halftime really helped us with our confidence in overtime," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "The team competed together and worked together. We were in and out with our aggressiveness, but in the second half the team decided to fight for the win. I was pleased with how Erika came in off the bench and didn't lose her cool in an environment that can be tough for a freshman. Ashley Clark also had a good shooting percentage, and took the ball to the basket. Overall I am pleased with our performance."
Tulsa outscored Texas Southern starting out the final half. They got back in the game when they tied the score 43-43 with 11 minutes on the clock. Texas Southern regained the lead shortly after, but it didn't last long. TU's Teanna Reid hit a three-pointer that gave TU the lead. The game was tied up again, 60-60, in the final minute, forcing overtime.
In overtime Turner, Wakefield, and Reid combined for seven points, closing out the game.
Tulsa shot 42 percent from the field, 31 percent from three-point range, and 76 percent from the free throw line, while Texas Southern was 40 percent from the field, 27 percent from the three, and 73 percent from the line.
TU will take on Buffalo Friday, November, 28, at 2:00 p.m. The game tips off in Coral Gables, Florida.
