Fire Consumes East Tulsa Home Early Saturday

Tulsa firefighters say they could see a heavy glow from an east Tulsa neighborhood as they rolled out on a house fire early Saturday.

A home in the 2700 block of South 116th East Avenue was destroyed in the fire that broke out just after 4 a.m.

Acting Captain Angel Hernandez said the roof of the home had already collapsed when they arrived, so they went on a defensive attack.

"The house was vacant; no possible victims that we could see, so we began to fight the fire," Hernandez said. The home had no furniture and utilities were shut off, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

"Vacant homes are always nice little havens for homeless people to try to keep warm," the Tulsa fire captain said. "We're not sure if there was an accellerant that was used, but the investigator's currently doing his investigation."

Hernandez said the cold temperatures meant some of the lines froze as they were using them.

Six companies were called to the scene - about 45 firefighters. There were no injuries.
