Two men on board a small plane avoided major injury when it crashed southeast of Bixby Friday.

The plane went down near 161st Street South and 153rd East Avenue, south of the Arkansas River and north of Leonard. According to the Federal Aviation Administration's web site, the airplane is a Funk B85C built in 1946.

News On 6 has learned the plane was being flown by a pilot named Alex Rabbitt, 19, with a passenger who's also an instructor on board.

Rabbitt's grandfather told News On 6 at the scene that he used to own the plane but sold it to a Tulsa man who's out of town. A man driving by saw the wrecked plane and went to help the two men. He told News On 6 the men said there was an issue with the plane's control system which caused the crash.

Video from Osage SkyNews 6 HD showed the single-engine propeller-driven plane went down in a plowed field, ripping off its landing gear and flipping onto its top.
