Three are dead and another person is hospitalized after a fiery head-on crash in Muskogee County, OHP said.

Two were pronounced dead at the scene and paramedics transported two others, troopers said. One person died after being transported, and the other is in a Tulsa hospital in an unknown condition.

The crash took place around 5 p.m. on Highway 16 near 94th Street.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a vehicle traveling west on Highway 16 veered into the eastbound lane and hit another vehicle head on, then both vehicles burst into flames.

The bodies were severely burned in the fire. Troopers said at this time it is not clear if those who died at the scene died from the crash or from the fire. The medical examiner will rule on cause of death.

OHP will release the names of those involved after notification of next of kin.

The highway still is closed at that area until further notice. The fire and wreck caused damage to the highway and it will require an ODOT crew to work through the night.
