Muskogee homeowners could soon have fewer options when it comes to roofing material. City councilors are discussing whether to allow sheet metal roofing in residential areas.

Doug Diebold, owner of Sooner Steel Sales, says he can't afford to have sheet metal banned in certain areas. He thinks it's a better product - and the ban could have a big effect on the community.

"It's 45 percent of my business," he said. "I always thought metal on the roof was the future, the way we were going."

The city is considering a zoning change that would put an end to metal roofs and siding in neighborhoods.

City Councilor Dan Hall says it was never meant to be that cut and dried. There had been some issues with lower quality work being done and city ordinances being met.

"We just want to make sure it's a good and safe product," he said.

The ordinance would grandfather in existing structures with this type of roofing but streamlining restrictions for new construction or renovations.

They tabled the question to take a closer look at city code.
