Public Asked To Help Locate Killers Of Man Found In Caney River

Investigators are working around the clock to track down a killer and are asking the public for help.

Deputies found Rafael Hernandez Torres dead in the trunk of his car in the Caney River near Collinsville on Friday.

As Torres' family makes plans to bury him at the Kennedy-Jennard Funeral home in Tulsa, investigators are working relentlessly to find out who killed him.

They want to talk to anyone who was friends, acquaintances or used his taxi cab service to help connect the dots.

Torres had big plans for his future. He hoped to grow his business, provide for his daughter and continue helping people in the Hispanic community.

Those dreams were cut short when someone shot him multiple times, put his body in the trunk of his own car and then drove it into the Caney River.

"You don't have to be a bad person for someone to do something bad to you," said Major Coy Jenkins with the Rogers County Sheriff's Office.

Jenkins said Torres was killed very early Friday morning and that his phone records are providing more insight into the last few hours of his life.

"They are being reviewed and it does provide a story, an outline,” he said.

It doesn't tell the whole story, however.

Torres owned a taxi cab service, El Correcaminos, or "The Roadrunner" primarily used by people who don't speak English.

Investigators want to know who his clients were, especially his regulars.

“There are people out there that feel that anything that they would have would not contribute to the investigation, and we find that often leads to unfurling a lot of other detail,” Jenkins said.

The main focus for detectives is on the Hispanic community. Investigators are working through language barriers, calling on interpreters to help translate information from family or friends.

That also applies to anyone who calls the Roger's County Sheriff's Office anonymous tip line.

It doesn't matter what language it's in, only that detectives get the information.

"The investigators need it, the family needs it, this young man who was brutally murdered, he needs it for justice to be served," Jenkins said.
