If you could rent a bike to use around town - would you? A new system called Bike Share is coming to Tulsa.

The bike sharing system is a project sponsored by the Indian Nations Council of Government. Jennifer Haddaway with INCOG is managing the project.

It's exactly what it sounds like," she said. "Everyone in the community sharing a bike system."

Haddaway was at Guthrie Green this week demonstrating what the Bike Share program will look like.

Kiosks and docking stations would be located at potential high use spots around downtown. The typical one would have 10 bikes and would operate with a credit card or a membership card you would buy.

Krista Crum is with BCycle, one of several vendors who might want to be the eventual Bike Share provider.

"Tap the silver button to wake it up, scan your card, and the bike releases," she said, demonstrating at one of the kiosks.

Simple enough.

The overall plan will determine the locations where the bikes would be most useful to local residents, and visitors. You would take the bike for as long as you need it.

"You are given a certain amount of time, 30 minutes, 45 minutes or an hour," Crum said.

It could be longer if necessary. The bikes could come with a built in bike lock, so if you had intermediate stops you could secure the bike before you turn it in.

That looks easy too. I think even I could figure this think out.

May 11 - 15 is National Bike to Work Week. You can join Bike to Work in Tulsa here.
