Fire Breaks Out At KAMO Power In Vinita

Vinita and Big Cabin firefighters responded to a fire at KAMO Power in Vinita. KAMO is a rural electric cooperative located off U.S. Highway 69 on the west side of town.

The fire broke out around 11:40 a.m. and burned a section of the roof on the original headquarters building which is undergoing remodeling, according to a KAMO spokesperson. About a third of a new roof overlay was damaged.

The company has moved to a new building in the same location.

"The fire has been contained and did not impact or affect their newly built office facility," said Sid Sperry of the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives.

Sherry Criswell Hargrove was checking on her cattle when she saw thick, dark smoke rising above KAMO.

She snapped several photos from a nearby pasture.

Their website states KAMO's headquarters are in Vinita, serving 17 member distribution cooperatives in northeast Oklahoma and southwest Missouri. They have a high voltage transmission network providing power.

Several fire trucks were at the scene of the electric cooperative. Big Cabin firefighters were called in to provide mutual aid to the town's response.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one was injured.
