A small volunteer fire department in Osage County received a new radio system worth almost $20,000 on Saturday.

Firefighters in Avant had the equipment donated to them through the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

The new radios will help crews communicate better, especially with neighboring departments during mutual aid events.

Before the donation, firefighters had to rely heavily on cell phones.

"Now we can leave our cell phones at home and we can communicate all the way to Pawhuska and all the systems in our area and we have no problems with it," Gene Atkins said.

Since 2005, the foundation of sandwich chain Firehouse Subs has donated close to $300,000 dollars to fire departments in Oklahoma alone.
