An Oklahoma County detention officer is charged for trying to smuggle meth inside the Oklahoma County Jail.

When Alexander Plant showed up to report for his shift, he was in for just as big of a surprise as the sheriff was when he found out Plant had received and planned to deliver drugs to an inmate.

An investigation by the district attorney’s office revealed what was happening, and detectives notified the sheriff.

“He was coming in to start his shift,” Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Mark Opgrande said.

“He was taken in for questioning. It was during that questioning that we searched Mr. Plant, and on Mr. Plant we found approximately six and a half grams which tested positive for methamphetamine.”

Sheriff Whetsel fired Plant immediately and personally booked him into the county jail.

“He took this as a great offense that somebody who was working for him was willing to go to these lengths and break the law in such a way that he decided to fire him on the spot and personally take him down to the receiving and book him in,” Opgrande said.

Detectives believe it all started when inmate Caden Matthews and wife, Julie, plotted with another man, Jason Tucker, to smuggle meth to Matthews.

Court documents state Tucker "began to receive text messages from a phone number for delivery and pick up of the drugs and money." Investigators traced that number back to Plant.

The plan was for Plant to pick up the drugs from inside the restroom of the Wal-Mart located on Northwest Expressway and make $1,000 on the deal, but that plan was foiled when authorities found a "small plastic baggie containing what appeared to be methamphetamine hidden inside Plant's sock."

Plant bonded out of jail and wasn't home.

“I can’t talk about it,” his father said.

“When something like this happens, we feel like it’s just a slap in the face for everybody,” Opgrande said. “He swore an oath to uphold the law, and he tainted that oath and the uniform that he wore.”

Plant's attorney, Billy Bock, said Plant is sorry for any role he played. All four people involved were charged with numerous counts.
