Broken Arrow Police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who suffered a head injury.

Detectives believe someone abused him, and they spent the day interviewing the boy’s family.

Hospital staff called detectives to St. Francis Children's Hospital after they thought they boy's injuries looked suspicious and weren't consistent with the story they were told.

The boy was taken to the hospital Friday. He died Monday morning.

Broken Arrow Corporal, Leon Calhoun, and other detectives are trying to figure out how the boy was so badly injured to his head that he died.

"Even if the child would not have succumbed to his injuries, we still would have started this process. It's disheartening for all involved that the child did not make it through the surgery and treatment,” he said.

Broken Arrow Police said a family member drove the boy to Hillcrest Hospital South on Friday, then, an ambulance took him to St. Francis Children's Hospital because of the extent of his injuries.

The staff at St. Francis called police after they suspected the injuries might be child abuse.

“There could be some circumstances that would lead them to believe it may not have occurred possibly as they have been told - or a suspicious nature in some way or some form," Calhoun said.

Calhoun couldn't say who was taking care of the boy at the time he was injured.

He said cases like this are very unsettling because most of the detectives have kids of their own.

"Anytime you go to something like this it's obviously traumatic, and especially when you see something happen to a child," Calhoun said.

Detectives are interviewing family members and anyone else who had contact with the 3-year-old boy before or after he was injured.

"We'll go off of that information and see how that matches with the evidence we actually have as far as injuries," Calhoun said.

Police are hoping to release more information soon.
