Oklahoma law enforcement agencies held another one of their drinking and driving checkpoints overnight. This time it was at 7th and Harvard, near the University of Tulsa campus. In the four hours they were out there, officers checked 213 vehicles.

The effort resulted in 12 arrests for driving under the influence, two felony warrant arrests and 20 misdemeanor warrants served. Authorities also issued 109 citations.

One woman with kids in her car was taken in for suspicion of DUI, a fact Oklahoma Highway Patrol Captain Kurt McKean said he found hard to image.

"You've got precious lives in the back seat, and every life out here is precious," McKean said. "How selfish of an act to kill your own children, yourself or someone else."

The checkpoint was part of a continuing, state-wide campaign to end DUIs. McKean noted in this age of technology, there are many options for drivers to get a ride instead of driving under the influence of any substance.

""If you're gonna take prescription medication or use alcohol, don't get behind the wheel," he said.

Tulsa resident Tyvette Gunnels was booked into jail on two complaints of child endangerment, driving under the influence of drugs, driving without a license, and two complaints of child restraint violations.

The ENDUI Labor Day weekend campaign was paid for as part of a grant from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office. Tulsa Police Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Broken Arrow Police, Sand Springs Police and the Oklahoma ABLE Commission participated in the checkpoint.
