The homes in the Brady Heights District just north of downtown are hidden gems of Tulsa’s history. Many of the homes were built back in the early 1900s, including the mansion that gave the district its name.

The Brady mansion -- one of the better known homes here in the district --  was one of the historic mansions on the 2015 tour list.

Penny Krout and her husband love architecture and made the tour of the historical homes in Brady Heights a must see.

“I think that maybe people who don't work downtown and get near this part of town very often don't realize what a gem we have here,” Krout said.

The tour gave visitors a look at 12 of the neighborhood's century-old homes.

Some have been restored, others are a work in progress.

“You can tell that the people who own them, really love them and care about them," Krout said.

A major draw on the tour is the Brady mansion, which was built back in 1920 and is one of the homes for sale in the neighborhood.

A peak inside takes you back to grander days. The asking price is around $600,000.

The tour is put on every two years by the Brady Heights Historic District Inc., and it's not your average homeowners association.

The group is a 501(c)3 nonprofit geared at preserving and rebuilding the neighborhood.

“We do a lot in the community to try to teach people how to fix up old houses and help them understand the process because all of the homes in this neighborhood are zoned historic preservation overlay,” group representative Brian Parker said. “A lot of educational opportunities and education and helping people in getting their homes fixed up."

Ticket sales from the tour go toward tour operating costs and help raise money for projects in the district.

It's a slice of Tulsa history that those who live here hope never to lose, and a place they hope is never forgotten.

“It's an important part of our history," Krout said.
