The Tulsa Fire Department was called to the scene of a fire at the U-Haul Building at 5th and Archer Sunday afternoon.
From the Osage SkyCam network, smoke could be seen coming from the attic area just before 5 p.m. A few hours later, the fire was under control, but officials said it was a labor-intensive operation because of how many things were stored in the attic. Firefighter said they were having to drag each item out and hose it down one at a time.
Firefighters are going up in buckets to assess the situation from the outside, while others made their way inside. TFD brought in 15 companies and more than 60 firefighters for the fire, Capt. Stan May said.
May said it doesn't appear the fire reached the third floor, but there could be water damage.
One firefighter had to be treated for dehydration, but he has been released.
U-Haul says they will be calling customers Monday who had items stored in the building. They said their truck and trailer rentals will be moved to another U-Haul facility while crews assess damage from the fire.
The U-Haul building is a landmark. The rotating U-Haul truck on the building's roof has been an iconic sight in the city's skyline since 1978, but the building itself was built in 1930, right as Tulsa felt the weight of the Great Depression. It was constructed for the National Supply Company, which was in existence before statehood and sold well supplies during the oil boom.
