As winter weather continues its march across the state, rain, sleet and ice could make driving Friday morning extremely dangerous, especially in western and northwestern parts of the state.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says travel is discouraged across some of the western areas of the state.

Across Green Country, it is soggy and cold and will be throughout Friday, which is causing problems with low-lying roads. Around 9 a.m., and for about an hour on Friday morning, ODOT closed a portion of Oklahoma 69A about 2 miles north of Miami on the Will Rogers Turnpike due to flooding. It is reopened.

At 11 a.m., ODOT said Oklahoma 31 had been closed west of McAlester due to high water.

Roadways are expected to be slick in western Osage and in Pawnee County during the afternoon and evening hours, NWS says.

Check Oklahoma Road Conditions

Out west, it is a little colder and a little nastier. Highways are slick and hazardous in the Panhandle and northwestern Oklahoma, including the Woodward area, as freezing precipitation continues, ODOT says. Crews are treating highways and bridges in these areas.

Slick conditions on bridges are also reported in Blaine, Grant and Kay counties.

If travel is necessary, drivers are urged to use caution, especially on bridges, overpasses and when entering or exiting highways as freezing temperatures may continue causing slick spots to develop on wet roadways. Drivers should stay at least 200 feet behind road clearing trucks and equipment and not attempt to pass.

Drivers should allow plenty of extra time to reach their destinations. To stay updated, drivers should check local weather conditions before traveling. They can also view interstate and metro area traffic conditions and camera views at oktraffic.org and follow @OKDOT on Twitter.

If drivers must travel out of state they are urged to check area road conditions:
