A Tulsa family escaped a destructive house fire near 56th Street North and Peoria early Monday. The family of five was inside the home when the fire sparked around 4:30 a.m.

One of the children - an 8-year-old girl - woke up after hearing popping noises and alerted her family, according to Tulsa Fire Department.

Two adults, an 11-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl also made it out safely and called 911. It was a fortunate escape because they did not have a working smoke detector.

Crews arrived here and were able to put out the fire quickly, but the home is expected to be a total loss. There is major interior damage, and the flames shot through parts of the roof.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with their needs this morning.

Tulsa Fire Department Captain Stan May said the cause of the fire is believed to be electrical issue in the living room.

"Had this young girl not awakened when she did this incident could have turned into a tragedy in just a few more moments," he said in a news release.

"If a home owner does not have a working smoke detector, they can call the Tulsa Fire Department at  918-596-9422 or 918-596-9444 to request one," he said.

A fire crew will call and set up a time to install one, according to May.
