Highways in central and western Oklahoma are slick and hazardous and conditions are expected to worsen in the overnight hours with additional precipitation and falling temperatures. Drivers are urged to consider changing any unnecessary travel plans and to closely monitor weather conditions ahead.
Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews continue salt and sand operations from the Texas and Kansas borders in western Oklahoma towards central Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City metro is reporting rain at this time but temperatures could cause conditions to quickly deteriorate to icy and hazardous Sunday night. Caution should be used on bridges and overpasses.
I-35 north of Oklahoma City and I-40 west of Oklahoma City are also very slick and considered hazardous. US-412 is closed near Boise City in Major County due to icy conditions. Texas DOT officials continue to have I-40 closed west of Amarillo in Texas. Eastern Oklahoma is reporting wet conditions at this time, including the Tulsa metro.
If travel is unavoidable, drivers should check local weather conditions before traveling and allow extra time.
• Stay at least 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
• Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
• Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
• Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
The City of Yukon also reported a road closure at Wagner from Highway 4 to 11th Street. The city spokeswoman said a power pole was on fire and the wires were almost on the ground.
The City of Yukon also canceled Christmas in the Park due to the inclement weather.
