One person is dead following an early morning fire in Midwest City.
Firefighters were called about 3 a.m. to the home on East Fairchild, but by the time they arrived it was already too late.
Jose Soto lives next door. He said the victim was more than a neighbor, he was a friend.
“What can I say about him?” Soto said. “We lost a good friend. I hope he’s in a better place.”
The victim will not be identified until next-of-kin notifications have been made.
“There’s nothing suspicious about the fire,” said Dave Richardson with the Midwest City Fire Department. “But it looks like the origin is in the living room. The victim, who we believe to be the homeowner, was in the bedroom at the time.”
The victim, who we are told was in his 60's or 70's and lived by himself, was well known in this community.
“He was really sweet,” neighbor Amanda Jones recalls, “Every Veterans Day he’d some over to Tina’s house and we’d all have food and she’d make him a red white and blue cake because he was a veteran.”
Fire officials said the home did not have working smoke detectors.
“The reporting party tried knocking on the windows as they saw smoke and flames coming from, I assume, from it being so early in the morning someone being asleep and not being aware of the fire, but they got no response of anyone coming to the door answering or anything,” Richardson said.
