Construction Begins On 'The Boxyard' In Tulsa's East Village

Construction crews started working in Tulsa’s East Village on The Boxyard.

The project was announced last year and it will be made solely out of shipping containers and will house restaurants, shops and even outdoor space for live music.

A lot of fun, but challenging is how developer Casey Stowe describes the process of making The Boxyard - a close to $3 million project - a reality.

"It stayed pretty true to the original thing we sketched almost two years ago," he said.

In total, 38 shipping containers will make up the space that will house everything from specialty shops to restaurants.

Stowe said, "People think you just sit down a bunch of shipping containers and start living, but what people don't know is it takes quite a bit to fit them out and make them to where you can run a business out of them."

Crews got to work this week, prepping the 14,000 square feet where The Boxyard will soon be located.

The shipping containers will be purchased locally, through the same Catoosa-based supplier and modifier responsible for those on the patio of Fassler Hall.

“Some spaces are single containers, some doubles, and some are up to five containers that people are taking," Stowe said.

Already confirmed tenants include Dwelling Spaces and Joebot's Coffee Bar along with Masa restaurant, and Stowe said they only have a few spaces left.

“The excitement other people have shown is really neat. When they see what you are putting together and proposing, and they get on board and excited about it. It has been very positive," he said.

Downtown, along 3rd Street, has exploded in the past year with new apartments, businesses and event space, and Stowe believes The Boxyard will be a great addition.

Stowe said, "It is gonna be something you haven't seen in Tulsa, so I'm really looking forward to it and I think a lot of people are too.”
