Wagoner Police confirm an officer shot and killed a suspect.
The chief of police said the shooting happened after a high-speed pursuit. The suspect, 25-year-old Andrew Robert Henson, reportedly tried to ram the officer with his car just after midnight Tuesday.
The confrontation took place after police tried to stop Henson's vehicle for a routine traffic violation, Chief Bob Haley told News On 6. Henson drove off then hit the officer's car before rolling his own vehicle.
Chief Haley said Henson got out of his car and ran, making a threatening gesture to the officer who then shot him. He said it's their first officer-involved shooting in five years and is a scary situation for his officers.
"They're a different form of family, and when you start seeing them going through those types of situations and stuff, it's tough for everybody involved," he said.
The chase, which went from the through the county before returning to the city of Wagoner, ended near SW 13th and Polk in a residential neighborhood.
Residents say they woke to gunshots in the middle of the night in what they say is usually a quiet community.
Cynthia Crawford said she saw it all unfold.
"You could smell the ammunition smoke all out here," Crawford said. "That second one that went pow - that's when he fell."
The officer, who has been put on administrative leave during the investigation, is expected to be OK, the police chief said.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to lead the investigation. They say Henson had a felony warrant for his arrest on burglary charges out of Mississippi but was living with a family member in Wagoner.
County and city law enforcement officers as well as Wagoner firefighters were at the shooting scene Tuesday morning.
"We're not used to this," said Wagoner resident Cynthia Crawford. "Not in this little old small town, you know? And to see this right next to where you live."
