The Oklahoma State Department of Health says the first cases of West Nile virus in Tulsa County this year occurred in the past week.

The department says the West Nile virus season in Oklahoma typically runs from June to October.

The OSDH says statewide, so far this year, they have seen 11 reported cases in six counties:

  • Oklahoma    2
  • Pittsburgh    3
  • Stephen       1
  • Tulsa           2
  • Washington 1
  • Woodward   1

The department says the persons of greatest risk of exposure to infected mosquitos are those over the age of 50.  On the positive side, the OSDH says over 80-percent of those infected with the virus never become ill.

They say so far this year, no Oklahoman has died from the virus.
