Sheriff: Mayes County Woman Made Up Clown Attack Story

The Mayes County Sheriff says the woman who reported being attacked by three people dressed as clowns made up the story.

Two weeks ago Amie Jones reported being attacked by a woman and two men dressed as clowns. She said they beat and choked her on the side of a road.

Sheriff Mike Reed now says the victim lied, but she is standing by her story of being attacked by a clown.

Reed said after his investigators discovered inconsistencies in the woman's story they pulled her in for a second interview. That's when they said she admitted she scratched her own face, put a knot on her head by banging it against the steering wheel and even got a marker out of her car and wrote “Clown Posse” on her own face.

"It was lie, after lie, after lie, after lie, after lie," Reed said.

The sheriff said Amie Jones first said her window was down then said attackers knocked on her window. He said she first said it was clown makeup then said clown masks, and said she was fighting the whole time.

"’So did one of them, at some point, take your head and hold your head still?’ ‘Well, no. Why?’ ‘How'd they write clown posse so you could read it?’ ‘Good question,’” Reed said.

He said his office wasted tons of manpower chasing down leads in five counties, paid overtime and pulled deputies off regular assignments.

Reed said, "We have a couple of knuckleheads running around jerking people out of their cars, that's unacceptable."

He said the district attorney agreed to charge Jones with obstruction.

"I just don't understand people," Jones said.

With tears in her eyes, Jones said the inconsistencies were from her being distraught.

Crying, Jones said she only admitted writing on her face to stop the three-hour interrogation. She denies hurting herself and offered to take a lie detector.

Lori: "So, Amie, do you stand by your story?"
Jones: "Yes, I do."
Lori: "What will you do if they charge you with obstruction?"
Jones: "I don't know."

She said if there's an arrest warrant she will surrender.

The sheriff said in addition to the frustration over the wasted manpower, this story unnecessarily scared people.

Reed wants people to go out and have fun on Halloween, and, as always, be smart and alert, but enjoy themselves.
