BAPD: Kidnapping Suspect Took Victim To Arkansas Against Will

Broken Arrow Police are teaming up with officers in Arkansas to investigate a kidnapping. Investigators say a Choctaw man broke into his ex-wife's home in Broken Arrow then took her across state lines.

Officers said the woman disappeared from her home Tuesday, but thanks to a call from a concerned family member they caught the suspect quickly.

It started with a phone call asking Broken Arrow Police to check on a missing woman.

"It was a concerned family member that hadn't spoken to her," Officer James Koch said.

Police went to her home near the Creek Turnpike and Elm and discovered she'd been abducted by her ex-husband, Randy Hamett.

Investigators said a major clue was a protective order she had filed against him.

"That leads us to believe that the relationship between the suspect and the victim was not very good," Koch said.

Hamett now faces charges in both states:

In Arkansas, he’s facing kidnapping, unlawful confinement and violation of protective order charges. In Oklahoma, he’s facing kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and battery, second-degree burglary and violation of protective order.

Officers say Hamett broke into his ex-wife's home and took her to Siloam Springs against her will. Investigators found them in a hotel room.

The woman had bruises but officers and experts said statistically the situation could have ended much worse.

"When a woman leaves the abuser, the chances for murder increase exponentially. Because if I can't have you, nobody can have you," said Susan Cox, assistant director at DaySpring Villa - a shelter for domestic abuse victims.

She said she wants all victims to know, “"There is help. If a woman is watching this and she is sitting at home and she's abused, there is help."

Hamett will go through his court proceedings in Arkansas then he’ll be extradited to Oklahoma to face the charges here.
