Jenks Player, Texas Signee Reese Leitao Accepts Plea Deal

Former Jenks football player and Texas signee Reese Leitao pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and received a deferred sentence in Tulsa County Court Tuesday, May 23.

Leitao was arrested in February for possession of a controlled and dangerous substance with intent to sell within 1,000 feet of a school which is a felony. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled drug schedule IV, and the judge gave him a 4-year deferred sentence. 

Leitao's plea deal will have the following conditions: obtain a drug & alcohol assessment and follow/complete its recommendations, write a letter of apology to Jenks Public Schools, his parents, and law enforcement officials, complete 40 hours of community service, complete four separate talks with schools (of defendant’s choice); topics to include discouragement of drug usage using his experiences, forfeiture of the money obtained from drug sales to the DA’s office and he has to participate in a personal meeting with DA Steve Kunzweiler prior to the conclusion of summer 2018, according to online court records. 

Leitao's deferment sentencing is scheduled for May 17, 2021, and the DA's office will supervise his probation, court records show.

According to his arrest report, the school principal found a Xanax pill in Leitao's backpack. Leitao then admitted to distributing the pills for money. In his wallet, he had $1,289 and another $20 was found in the side zipper of his backpack.

The tight end and son of former Tulsa assistant and current DePaul basketball head coach Dave Leitao originally committed to Nebraska before flipping and committing to the Longhorns in December, later making it official on National Signing Day.

Texas Head Coach Tom Herman said after Leitao's arrest that the school would address his scholarship after the case runs its course in the legal system.
